Grimsey island

Today was all about Grimsey Island. I woke up early, perhaps a little too early, to get ready for the ferry which leaves at 9am.  It was a beautiful morning, the wind has died down somewhat and the sun was bright.

The ferry first had to travel down the fjord and near the end I spotted at least two whales! They were a way of but I had my binoculars.  A speed boat spotted then and headed over at which point they dived, I saw their tail flukes as they went under but that was that

The ferry isn't that large, there's room for maybe 4 cars at a squeeze and 50 or so passengers so it is at the mercy of the waves.  I was okay for the first two hours but the last hour was a trial.

On arrival I marched off towards the Arctic circle marker which is in the form of a giant ball off concrete or rock!

There are I impressive cliffs and crashing waves around the island and many water birds.  I wandered back, through the small village to see their church and the lighthouse.  The church is under construction having sadly burned down a few years ago.

After all this I was pretty exhausted and not looking forward to the return ferry. The wind has picked up a little so it was even worse than before. I decided to stay on deck for much of the return so I could focus on the distance.  This did the trick but it was pretty cold out there and despite my efforts looking I saw no more whales.

Upon landing I was ravenous. Everything bar one restaurant was shut but that one didn't disappoint, fresh cod and chips. The cod wasn't battered or anything but was cooked perfectly.

The only problem is now my brain keeps telling me everything is moving up and down on waves even though I'm back on dry land...
