Midge Lake

Today I was traveling around Myvatn aka midge lake and my oh my does the name fit.

My first stop off was a small forest bounding the lake with view points over the area.

There were even a few little gardens that were rather attractive along the route.

I learned however that you had to cover up and smear insect repellant everywhere else to keep the midges at bay.

Next I visited some pseudo craters which are apparently created when mama covers into contact with water with explosive results.  It was pretty but I spent most of the time despairing about the midges.

After lunch I thought I'd try something indoors.  There's a bird museum on the other side of the lake. I want expecting much but it was amazing. The building itself was something else, beautifully architectured with a grass roof.

Inside the main building there were stuffed examples of all birds found in Iceland!

There was another display of the first motor boat introduced to Myvatn, before they'd built any roads to the north which I find quite enjoyable too.

Now I'm at camp again, this time one next door to where the bus to Askja departs tomorrow.  The entire trip takes 12 hours gulp!
